Politics and Church
By Rev. Dave Beaman of Missionary Disciples of Christ
Churches have no legal business messing with politics. It is not permitted of tax-exempt organizations. And unless there is a genuine theological conflict, churches should be law abiding. Jesus certainly did not advocate breaking laws. He said, "Render unto Caesar ...". And He said that no leader would have authority unless God permitted it. Jesus disappointed many who expected the Messiah to be a rebellious, political leader. He would have nothing to do with that. And He was far more critical of the religious group with which He identified (Judaism and very likely Pharisaism within Judaism) than He was of the Roman law. Churches also have no business giving sway to celebrity status. Everyone should be treated equally in church. No member of the congregation should be given special treatment. Church is not about celebrity; it is about worshipping and learning about God in community. And it is about charitably loving God and neighbor together with the caring that goes along with that charitable love.

It seems today that too many religious leaders have a lot to say about politics and too many politicians have a lot to say about religion.
